A Health Instructor Teaches Her Students About The Significance Of Alcohol Dependency Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the largest co-ed high school in the district. Although she had been teaching for only four years, she had already obtained a reputation as an instructor with educational methods that encouraged and motivated the pupils in her class to think and to learn.
As an illustration, one Friday morning at 8:00 she addressed her pupils and announced the following: "For the next week we are going to learn about some typical alcoholism signs from a general point of view and we are also going to learn about a number of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a more detailed standpoint."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will absolutely demonstrate that an individual with a drinking problem is an alcohol addicted individual, but the more signs that a drinker exhibits, the stronger the possibility that he or she is an alcohol dependent individual."
Miss Jackson then informed the students in the class that each person would be held responsible for studying four alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her results to the class by way of a twenty-five minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her class to go over the list and rank the top five alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After approximately ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and informed the students in her classroom that after she goes over the numbers, she will present her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked the students in her class to look over the information on the piece of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, questions, or concerns. Within 10 or 20 seconds, almost every student in the class raised her or his hand. It was noticeable that the students had some concerns, questions, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. As an illustration, just about every pupil had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, to be exact, "Do you feel really ill when you quit drinking?"
Miss Jackson then informed the students in her classroom why this answer was the most accurate sign of alcohol addiction. She pointed out that the foremost difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.
In effect this means that when an alcohol addicted individual all of a sudden quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the person who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to appreciate the major difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.
A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the buzz exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had inspired and motivated the students in her classroom to stop and think about an essential social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
